Of Religion and Tolerance

Every religion claims to help us seek salvation. The ways may be different, the means different too; but the destination remains the same – a safe and peaceful afterlife. But at what price? Sydney and Peshawar attacks are still fresh in our memory and now Paris joins them. Is religion really that weak to accept satire / critic? And if yes, is death the only solution?

All religions teach patience, love for one another and tolerance in the face of adversity. Aren’t these the traits that we desperately seek in today’s world? What happened in Paris is deplorable. Every rational thinking person will heavily condemn it. But this isn’t an isolated incident. We, in India, have been facing the same issue, but not at a “terrorism” level, so to speak. Books have been burnt, authors forced to leave, their private properties destroyed – all this simply because we are not tolerant towards what these authors have written against our religion. Same is the case with movies and cartoons.

It’s wrong to judge a religion based on certain religious fundamentalists. First things first, not everyone in a particular religion gets offended by satire / book / movie / other published work. Only a handful of them gets “hurt”, others simply chose to ignore it and move on. Which, in my opinion, is completely understandable as people react to similar circumstances in different ways. People who are hurt, will respond differently to this situation – some will chose to provide feedback, some will stop reading the newspaper or stop watching movies made by a certain hero / director. Which is also fine as people are entitled to decide what they would like to read as there are a plethora of options available. What is not fine is when some people take it upon themselves to uphold the sanctity of their religion and cause physical harm (like destroying homes or even killing) others.

People’s interpretation of religious scriptures play a part too. Interpretation of a book / movie / cartoon lies with the audience. These products have a shelf life and will soon die and be forgotten. But the same cannot be said of religious books. The scriptures transcend generations along with its interpretations. Why do we have caste, sub-caste, sects within a religion? And why are the traditions different within a religion? It’s primarily because certain people chose to read the holy book differently and were eventually separated as a different sect altogether. Interpretations change even when a holy book is transliterated from one language to the other.

From the media perspective, it’s difficult to comprehend what can be safely published and won’t harm any religious sentiments. In a football stadium, if a section of the crowd starts shouting at a player referring him to an animal or even gesticulating, it is considered a racial abuse. But a renowned comedian visits the same place and cracks racial jokes, people who belong to the same race enjoys it. A city, subject to a terror attack, is condemned by one and all but the same city restricts one religion to follow their tradition is brushed under the carpet.

India is a country where its too complex to adopt “free speech” or freedom of expression. I don’t think we will ever have free speech in its entirety. We currently have free speech within the confines of religious walls. As long as you don’t encroach upon the zone where it hurts a particular religion, you are free to say what you like. The moment you cross the line and its noticed by the fundamentalists, then you are at their mercy.

Religion came to this world to show us a way of life and how to live within the predefined boundaries of patience and tolerance. Ironically, their followers have chosen to be impatient and intolerant to protect their own identity that was once defined by their religion.

Of Terrorism, Religion and Forced Conversions

The world around us is buzzing off late. And not all are for the right reasons.

Sydney Café attack started it all. Customers of the café went in for their breakfast ended up running out of the café to save their lives. What we saw was absolute irony of the life we live. On one side, there was an armed man, who was out on bail for assault on his ex-wife, terrorizing the customers of the café. On the other side, police and paramedics alike were trying their best to save as much lives as possible with least amount of damage. And then, bizarrely, there were some who were more interested in taking selfies in front of the terror site! Like it or not, this is the kind of world we live in.
We thought we had seen the worst. And then we immediately changed our perception the very next day.

Peshawar attack will go down in history as one of the most brutal and dastardly terror attack. Terrorism is bad and there’s no sane justification for the actions, but targeting kids and that too in a school? More than 130 kids have died and those who remain will carry the psychological scar throughout their life! We know there is no religion in terror and this attack proves just that. Killing innocents is not promoted in any religious scripture. Misinterpreting the scripture and brain washing young folks will not lead them to salvation / a peaceful after-life. And worst of all, the terrorists are fine with the incident with absolutely no remorse. The kind of world we live in.

Terrorism has united the world. But I wonder why did we wait for such a disaster to happen?

Nearer to home, a different but significantly less important fight is going on – conversions. No wait, forced conversions. The present government is rooting for development, which is good and beneficial to the overall growth of the country. There’s another section of the ruling government who are forcing non-Hindus to convert to Hinduism. They call it “ghar-wapasi” or homecoming. It’s like a tug-of-war between the forward moving forces (development) and the backward moving ones (forced conversions and communal statements). Considering the background of the people involved in the conversion initiative and the current political scenario (elections due next year and polarization), all this makes a lot of sense. Personally, I admire what our PM is doing at the national and international level. There’s serious optimism in the country faith-wise and money-wise. We can also anticipate inflow of funds from international entities. But what’s happening o the other side of the rope is taking more precedence in the media – and for rightful reasons. Development should be inclusive, should involve all religions and states. Development should include smaller sections of the society as well with no discrimination. Unfortunately, that’s not what’s happening. The kind of world we live in.

Personally, I have a different take on conversions. Whether we like it or not, conversions have been happening since the dawn of time. A new religion is formed when a leader rises and shows his followers a way of life and truth. People who were initially of a different religion, “convert” to the newer one. Jews converted to Christianity. Many religions converted to Buddhism post Buddha-era. These are conversions and this will continue. What some sections from the ruling party are doing is “forced conversions” which is totally against the constitution of India. No one can “force” anyone to join their religion. What is this – a race to be the biggest religion? The beauty of India lies in her diversity, let’s not destroy it. There are statements that convey all people will be converted to Hinduism by 2021 or so. Please don’t believe such statements and spread hatred. This will simply not happen and even our own friends whose religion is Hinduism won’t allow it.

None of the above mentioned problems are linked / can be compared. Some are very serious (terrorism) and some are naive (conversions). Big and small, but problem nevertheless.

These internal problems will eventually pass. Sanity will prevail. And India will remain as a country where diversity is applauded. That’s our USP and no one will “forcefully convert” it.

The Shepherds elevated on Christmas day..

First person account of a Shepherd:

The night was long. I was along with my co-workers guarding the unfortunate herd of sheep. Unfortunate as all their roads lead them to death. Either they will be dead meat or sacrifices in the holy temple. We were equally unfortunate as we were treated as the lower class and an outlier in the society. We were not respected for who we are, but treated based on our fate. We were ill-treated by the higher-ups in the society. The high priests and the leaders thought we were a nuisance to the society. We were not even allowed to attend the Holy Temple as we were expected to work throughout the day and also because of our image in the society.

So, here we are - a group of unwanted people guarding a group of a 'soon to be dead' animals in the night which seemed to have no hope of a new dawn! The only question each one of us had at that time was - "Why me?"

But that night had a purpose. That night was different. We became someone that night!

An angel appeared right in front of us. We are not used to an invasion at an time, let alone night. Needless to say, we were terrified! Based on our portrayal in the society, we feared for the worst. But the angel said to us:

Luke 2:10-14
10 - But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
11 - Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
12 - This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 - Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 - “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

A host of heavenly angels suddenly appeared in front of us and started praising the Almighty God. They seemed happy as if something big has happened or is going to happen. We were shocked. It  took us some time to grasp what has happened. This is what the scripture says about us:

Luke 2:15-20
15 - When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 - So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.
17 - When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,
18 - and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
19 - But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
20 - The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Guess what? We were the ONLY ones invited to visit our LORD. Not even the wise men, they came following a star. Not even the High Priests and the Leaders. No one in our hypocritical society. Only the shepherds. Such high esteem from the Almighty! And that too to a 'nobody' like me. I am forced to ask the same question I asked sometime back - "Why me?"

Wish you all a very Blessed Christmas and a Happy & Prosperous New Year! God Bless.

No Christmas without Christ.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Here's the reason why we celebrate Christmas (which I am sure you all know - but I have to make a point). Its a day when Jesus Christ (God's own son) was born. He was born to Joseph and Virgin Mary. He came as the solution to all the problems that people faced here on Earth. He is our Saviour who eventually sacrificed himself for our sins.

However, now-a-days, Christmas is more popular by the term X-MAS. Which is a fancy word to celebrate holidays and the marketers love it too. X-MAS consumes less space in any marketing collateral and there's more space for other stuffs like discounts etc. But theologically, I find it absurd. If you remove Christ from Christmas, there is no Christmas left to celebrate!

Now that I have made my point (short and pretty straight-forward), here's the crib that was made in our Church. The ground underneath is actual grass and not made of plastic. The crib has baby Jesus in the center surrounded by Joseph and Mother Mary, shepherds, 3 wise men and animals. Looks cool, isn't it?

Merry Christmas again everyone. Relive Jesus Christ's birth, its importance & significance in our lives and spread the joy that comes along with it!!

And eat lotsa cakes too.

PS: Different types of cakes served.. I feel like I am in the testing team today. And wait, they are actually calling me out.. I just cannot disappoint them today.. Got to go..

This could be my last blog if..

This could will be my last blog ... IF the world is ending on 21st May, 2011 (tomorrow). Atleast that's what is being said, proved and published by a certain someone called "Harold Egbert Camping". There are many billboards across America stating the same. And he apparantly has calculated the date based on Biblical verses.

Surprisingly, he had previously predicted the end of the world in the year 1994, which as you are already aware, didn't happen. He explained the 'continuation' of the world citing mathematical mistake on his part. He has also been part of many other controversies. He goes on to say that he will be watching the end of the world on his TV !! A huge claim.

Harold Camping's Calculation
  1. Its written in the Bible that there will be 7000 years gap between the flood that happened during Noah's time and the end of the world. God told Noah that he will destroy Earth in seven days. The flood, during Noah's time, destroyed everything on the Earth except for Noah and his family and 2 animals of each type since they were in protected in the Ark.
  2. In 2 Peter 3:8, it is written that one year is like a thousand years and thousand years are like one year for the LORD.
  3. He claims that the first destructive flood happened in BC 4990.
  4. Destroying Earth in 7 days and one day equivalent to a thousand years gave Camping the number 7000. And 7000 years later would be: -4990 + 7000 + 1 (to count the year 0) = 2011.
  5. Also, the date May 21 has been calculated using various verses in the Bible.
Repercussions:

All this is adding fuel to the ever growing group of Atheists. They will definitely take this and prove it to the "religiously confused lot" that there is no God and no heaven / hell / after-life. Quite a sorry state of affair, I would say personally. There are billions of people in the world believing in God. They don't deserve such a bad publicity of their religion.

What I feel:

Image: www.christiannewstoday.com
I am not an expert, but I do read Bible regularly and try to understand to the best of my potential. I have my reasons not to believe what Harold Camping is claiming:
  1. Bible never mentions any date regarding the end of the world. There will be an end eventually but when is to going to happen, no one knows. And no one is expected to know either. Not even Camping. Infact, in Mathew 24:3-4, Jesus told his disciples not to be misled when they asked him about the end of this world. Also, in Mathew 25:13, its clearly written that no one will know the date or hour of his return.
  2. Camping uses the phrase from 2 Peter 3:8 to prove his theory. In the verse, an year is 'LIKE' a thousand years and thousand years are 'LIKE' a year for the LORD. The word used is ''LIKE', which means a year and a thousand years are similar, not the same, thereby proving this theory wrong !!
  3. During Noah's time, floods happened in the year "BC 4990". I am not sure how did he, or for that matter, any historian calculated the exact year. Atleast, I have't heard of it.
  4. After the devastating flood, God promised that there won't be a flood of such a magnitude. Genesis 9:8-11: I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.
I don't want to challenge Harold Camping. I don't have anything against him. I don't want to term it as rubbish, but just the way he proved that the world will end tomorrow, others, including me, are proving that he is incorrect.

However, if the world is actually ending tomorrow, let this be my last blog. Else, I will be back soon !!

Origin of Easter Eggs

Easter is an important day in the life of Christians as it was on this day that Jesus Christ defeated death. This, I am sure, most of you might be knowing. But there is, supposedly, a custom associated with Easter. Its called 'Easter Eggs'. I did some research (Read: Google Search) on the origin of the custom and here are some if the findings:

There's a saying "Omne vivum ex ovo". And it means, "All life comes from an egg" !!

Before Christianity, there was Paganism, which was wide spread across America, Asia, Africa and Australia. The term 'pagan' is a Christian adaptation of the "Gentile" of Judaism. Anyways, in those times, the egg represented a new life, a beginning, a rebirth of the earth. With the advent of spring (in April), it was as if the Earth was reborn (poetically).

When Christianity started spreading across continents, christians started exchanging 'Eggs' on Easter Sunday. The connection??
  1. Easter is celebrated in April.
  2. Spring starts in April (in some countries, atleast)
  3. The common gifts / pleasantries exchanged in April were Eggs
  4. Easter signifies the risen Lord and Eggs signify a new life and hence the connection
So, if we actually look at it, there is no religious connection between Easter and Eggs. Even in Bible, there is no specific mention of Eggs. A ritual was followed and it continued. Now a days, Easter Eggs aren't actually eggs. They are replaced by chocolates and toys to suit the new world more concerned with packaging. Its more to do with the commercial aspect than the religious one.

Thats the mystery behind 'Easter Eggs'.

The day I met GOD.

Something pushed me out. Out of my body. I started floating, with no gravitational pull. All my life I was under the belief that there is nothing called as Gravitational force, Earth sucks. Now I am sure I was right and feel like telling the same to Sir Isaac Newton.

As I was floating, I saw some doctors working frantically on a body. It looked like an operation theater. The body looked familiar. Damn, it was ME !! Did I just die? Or is it one of my dreams? I thought of pinching myself, but I realized that I don't have a body. Just a spirit. I died. I saw my family outside the operation theatre. They were praying. My heart went out to them, but didn't feel like crying. Strange.

I was slowly taken above. I entered what seemed like an endless tunnel. It was completely dark and I was travelling at the speed of knots, with no end in sight. I was having a bizzare feeling of fearlessness, no anxiety, no expectations. All the earthly feelings were gone. I was sensing that something big is going to happen soon. But when will this tunnel end?

Then I saw a bright light presumably at the end of the tunnel. It was just a small dot, but was becoming bigger with every passing second. I reached the place from where that light was coming from. It was so bright. It was pure. Completely surreal. The experience was totally un-earthly. When I was on Earth, I was always anxious about everything. I was concerned about my family, my future, my financial investments, my job, security in life, et al. Here, I didn't feel anything. I feel so happy. I don't have my family here, I don't carry any money I made from Earth, yet I am so happy. Strange, again.

As I was exploring the place, I saw many 'spirits' singing, dancing and praising 'God'. There were angels too. But where is 'God' and what is his name, I wondered. Don't get me wrong, I was spiritually inclined while on Earth. I believed in God as a supernatural power and used to pray to him for all my (selfish) needs. But I didn't trust him completely because of science. But over here, theres nothing called as science.

I saw all the spirits were praising a single entity, one God. That surprised me, because we have many Gods down there on Earth. If there is only one God, there must be only one religion over here. Or maybe, no religion at all. Here, all were worshiping together and were happy.

Just for the record, I didn't see Newton's spirit anywhere. Wonder why?

And then the moment came. The moment I was waiting for. I met God. It was a very bright image. I could not see him properly, but I immediately felt his presence. I was completely filled with love. I felt secured. I wanted to see his face, but it was so bright I couldn't relate him to any of God's image I had known. Infact I was so overwhelmed by his presence that I cared less to identify him. I felt like living this moment forever.

I am happy over here.

Suddenly, something started pulling me back. Everything I experienced started diminishing. I lost sight of the spirits and angels and again went inside the dark tunnel. Everything was happening so quickly. The bright light started becoming smaller and smaller and then it was completely dark again. Before I knew it, i bumped onto my own body in the operation theater.

I opened my eyes. I was alive again. I just had a Near Death Experience (NDE). Everyone around me were happy. They were praising and thanking God. The same God I just met.

My experience didn't answer God's identity as we see / believe on Earth. But I am happy I experienced it as I saw the bigger picture most of us hardly see. We are so involved in fulfilling our earthly desires that we are losing our connect we had with the Almighty. Not everyone will have an NDE but we can atleast learn the lessons from people who went through it.

Maybe death is not the end. Maybe life just begins after death.

PS: The story is fictional but includes real experiences of people who had NDE's.

Life (and Death) as we know it..

As you sow, so shall you reap.

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted” - Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (Bible).

Scenario 1: A person commits a heinous crime, and is charge-sheeted. He is tried in a district court and is found guilty. He challenges it in the high court, guilty again. Finally he challenges it in the supreme court, but to no avail. The court decides that he should be "Hanged to Death".
Verdict: The highest judicial body decided to end the criminal's life.

Scenario 2: Due to some accident / event, a person becomes paralyzed. He is in a vegetative state and the doctors (even the best) say that science hasn't developed enough to help the person recover. Science can, at max, prolong his life (at a cost, which is high enough for a middle class family to afford). Finally, after a lot of thought, his family applies for Euthanasia (mercy-killing). Theres a catch, though. In India, Euthanasia is not legal. The supreme court decides against the euthanasia plea.
Verdict: The highest judicial body decided not to end the law-abiding citizen's life.

I am not comparing the two protagonists over here. There is no way we can even remotely compare a criminal with any law-abiding citizen.

I am pointing out the dubious ways in which justice is perceived.

A criminal will and should be punished, based on the crime he has committed. But death? I am sure none of the religion talks about killing a fellow human being. Do we have the 'right' to kill anyone? Are even even 'eligible' to kill anyone?

Having said that, if a person who is terminally ill, wants to peacefully end his life for a reason that is valid in the eyes of his family / near ones, and is requesting  for the same, do we have the authority to allow / disallow his request?

I am sure this debate will go on. But one thing is for sure, if we have the right to end a person's life (criminal, as in scenario 1), and we can't grant an ailing person his last wish (to die), we are being hypocrites.

PS: This blog is not on Euthanasia, neither am I against a death sentence. It only questions the morality of judgement.

Unsung Heroes of the Mahabharata !!!

Think of Mahabharata, and we think of Arjun, Pandavas, Krishna, Bhagawad Gita and the likes... We think of the victory Pandavas had to capture Hastinapura.... We think of the disguise Pandavas had as a dance teacher, a chef, and so on.... We think of how cruel Duryodhona and the Kauravas were.... The way they insulted Draupadi in front of the darbar..... But there were some unsung heroes of Mahabharata... People who made a lot of sacrifices due to which Mahabharata is what it is today... I will be highlighting those unsung heroes in this blog.... And the lessons we learn from them....

I am involving 2 key entities, Bheeshma and Karna...

Bheeshma:
Born of King Shantanu and Ganga, Bheesha was slated to take over from king Shantanu..... But in the meantime, something interesting happened.... King Shantanu fall in love with a fisherman's daughter.... And wanted to marry her... But her father had one condition: the son born off her daughter will become the official heir of the kingdom.... King Shantanu didn't like this condition at all... and went back to his kingdom... Bheeshma came to know of this development.. and immediately went to meet the fishermans's daughter, who laid down the condition in front of him.... Bheeshma promised that the son born off her daughter would be the official heir of the kingdom... But still her father wasn't satisfied... Thats when Bheeshma made an extremely crucial vow in front of everyone.... He vowed to remain a bachelor... !!! Thats a huge sacrifice, even in todays day and age.. !!! And in those days when you can have multiple husbands/wives !!! He sacrificed something that he totally deserves.... something that was his right...

Even before the war, Bheesma had to join forces with the Kauravas... As they were ruling the land and he had no option.... Bheeshma knew what he was doing is wrong... But he had to abide by the law of the land and the king.... And the way he was killed during the war.... Shikhandi's arrow hit him first and he was hiding behind Arjuna... And Arjuna seized the opportunity ...

Imagine Bheeshma
marrying and having children... Then there would NOT have been a Mahabharata in the first place !!!... There would have been Pandavas and kauravas... but they would have had to play second fiddle to the grandchilden of Bheeshma.... You never know !!!

Karna:
A sage visited a kingdom which was ruled by Kuntis father.... Kunti was given the responsibility to serve the sage, which she did to utter perfection.... The sage was so impressed with Kunti that he gave her a unique boon.... She can call unto any god and ask him to grant her a son.... The sage left... She was so happy and surprised about such a boon.. that she decided she should try it to believe it.... The next day, she called Surya and asked him to give her a son... and so Karna was born of all the Kavach-Kundala (with all the protection one needs during a war).... Kunti was extremely happy that her boon was working !!! But thats when she realized what has happened.. !!! She was still a virgin and wasnt even married.. !!! and she having a son would have been the most henious crime ever committed !!!! She prepared a basket and kept Karna inside it and threw him in the river... the basket was picked up by a local fisherman and took the child to his home and took care of him as if he was his son !!!

Krishna himself came to request Karna to join the pandavas for the war... But he refused... His point was, no one was there when he was alone... He was ridiculed for being a fisherman's son by the pandavas... and in such a scenario, it was Duryodhana who gave him the respect he deserves... Kunti also requested him to join pandavas.. but had to return empty handed....

During the battle, Karna was always an asset for the Kauravas... and was always tough to defeat... And Pandavas had to "bend-the-rules" to kill him.... which they eventually did... A sad end to a person who also had a sad beginning... He deserved a lot in life.... and thats how it remained....

Imagine Karna
accepting Krishna's offer to be with the Pandavas... Karna knew that Pandavas are much stronger as a unit.. and their chances of winning is more as long as Krishna/Arjun were together... The safest option would have been to join forces with the Pandavas... and since he is the oldest, he would also have been the King of Hastinapura.... Think about it...the battle would have been over in 5-6 days... rather than 18 days !!! And all the people and followers of Mahabharata and its stories would have known Karna as one of the best of those times.. and not Arjuna, who would have been 2nd best... A lot of positives.... yet he didnt accept the offer..... Why ??? Loyalty towards Duryodhana and insults he had to face from Pandavas.... These may be some of the reasons..... But the fact remains, he was always loyal to people whom he loved....

I will end the way I started.... Think of Mahabharata and we think of all the greats... But there are people... who made Mahabharata the way it is ....Unsung, they are.... and maybe thats what they preferred....
