That's all you need. That's "Attitude".
Here's a story of a loser guy who knows how to sing. Now this guys realizes the only way he can be successful in life is when he goes through the pain all successful singers went through! He desperately tries to fall in love with a girl, somehow becomes serious, becomes passionate, loses her (blah blah..) still goes after her, meets her again (blah blah again..). Eventually, when the police detains him, that's the moment he shows his middle finger. This is the story from the movie "Rockstar". The actor is Ranbir Kapoor. That year (2011) he goes on to win umpteen awards. Wonder what was the secret of his success?
Here's a story of an extremely talented Indian cricketer. He proved one and all that he is the future in the T20 and ODI format. He was taken to Australia for the Test series (2011). Along with the team, even he flopped. Indian team went through an embarrassing phase. As is always the custom in Indian cricket, one guy will have to take the responsibility of failure. The media pin-pointed our talented cricketer as the main reason. I can't blame the media here as even I felt he is the weakest link in the highly experienced Indian team. Even the Australian crowd felt that way. They started abusing him during matches. That's when he returns the favor. He shows his middle finger. Later that series, he scores a century and is considered as the only plus point in the otherwise lack lustre Indian team that toured Australia. His name is Virat Kohli. Wonder what was the secret of his success?
One man who popularized it was Stone Cold Steve Austin. He entered WWE (then WWF) as an over sized wrestler who eventually turned WWE's fortunes by thriving in the "Attitude Era". He is one of the main reasons why WWE is where it is now (#1 in professional wrestling + Entertainment). The ultimate anti-corporate! He showed his middle finger every single week. The irony is - his fans used to love it! He made middle finger popular! Have you ever heard of a "middle finger salute"? He did it! His fans responded back!
We are slowly but surely entering an era when students will vent their frustration directly at their teacher without saying a word and with only a single finger saying it all! Respect be damned!
If Virat Kohli (youth icon in cricket) can do it, why can't I? If Ranbir Kapoor (youth icon in Bollywood) can do it, why can't I?
On a lighter note, you need to channelize your talent along with the desired attitude to succeed. Only the finger won't help you as is evident in the image below.
An after-thought: I have a feeling that my post has been leaked given the fact that I am a product of Mumbai University and our history of leaking university papers! Incidentally, it was read by an Indian hockey player who used my theory to be successful. Let's all wish him success in his future endeavours!
From touching feet showing gratitude to a pointing finger showing attitude, India has finally come a long way!
Needless to say, sarcasm totally intended.

Good one dude..hope you did not write this entire post using your middle finger :)
ReplyDeleteHey Ronak, Long time no see! Waise you have a valid point and I have a valid answer. My last post was 3 weeks back. That's how much time it took yaar :D
DeleteLOL... And that's the bottomline because Binu Thomas said so!
ReplyDelete┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐ ;)
But also, showing a finger should suit you. Sonam Kapoor looks like a dumbass trying to pull that off...
Nice to know that you also followed / still follow WWE.. Was fun when Austin was active!
DeleteTrue Ashwini. That's definitely one way of looking at the incidents. But there's one more way - In Virat Kohli's case, it seems the crowd was getting into him, and his reaction was simply a knee-jerk one. But yes, he did get his publicity out of it! :D
ReplyDeleteToo much too abuse and dont have the time? Flaunt your finger! Sad, but things seem to work in these ways too!
ReplyDeleteYeah! Now-a-days, a finger speaks a thousand and one words.. :D
DeleteTHE ultimate attention grabbing act MF :D we all need to be in news no matter how we are projected!!!!
ReplyDeleteGOOD observation lol
Thanks Ramya. I get a feel that everyone thinks it more of a publicity stunt than anything else!
DeleteLOL and what an analysis Binu.
ReplyDeleteGoing by this post, I will never have instant success as I don't believe in this gesture and would never resort to it.
Quite an interesting take!
Thanks Saru.. And same here.. not at all possible to stoop to such a level for success.. However, that's what the world is doing now!
DeleteI agree and I am shocked to see when people who use vulgar language are more popular. Anyways we better stick to what we believe in.:)
DeletePoint well taken :)
DeleteInteresting post
ReplyDeletethanks
this one is well taken and well put together too the various examples you gave - right on.
ReplyDeleteoh by the way, i was reading the post seriously and nodding and by the time i came to the line "Only the finger won't help you as is evident in the image below" and saw you had put Sonam's picture, i broke into a big laugh. that was so so apt!!
Hehe.. She has talent, but is too engrossed in fashion and other needless things.. The first thing she needs to change is her PR.. :D
Deleteohh wait one more thing...i am a teacher/trainer and so the point where
ReplyDeleteu say students will start using the finger at their teachers freaked me out
:(
let everything else u say on your whole blog come true but pls not this!!!! :DD
I hope so too yaar! :D But then, you can give it back too :D
Deletenicely written Binu...i think i will use this gesture in near future...not to become famous but to show my attitude to people trying to bully me...i think its OK, wat say???
ReplyDeleteHey Hari, I would be diplomatic here and will suggest not to use it at home, school, college, work or anywhere you go! :) Stay safe. Dont try this! :D

Sure Hari!
DeleteVery well written and nice analysis Binu. Yes its kind of disturbing trend when for everything people start using the middle finger. Would like to share an incident with you. I was riding with my dad on a two wheeler and one car showroom guy was driving a maruti just behind us. In front of us there was a truck and there was no place for a two wheeler to move ahead forget about the car. So this person kept on honking and I got so irritated and in the spur of the moment, I showed him the middle finger, his expression was worth watching...:P My irritation turned into a laughter thing and I couldn't believe myself as to why I showed him that...:)
ReplyDeleteYes you are right, we Indians have come a long way and in some cases this is not the right way to make our point clear.
Hehe.. Instinct took over you Prashanth.. I think as long as the other person takes it as an insult, these sort of things will happen..
ReplyDelete:) :) :) Sonam Kapoor! She not only used the finger but also wardrobe malfunction...! BTW, I am a HUGE Austin Fan - I chant "what?!" & "Thats the bottomline..." all the time and have to agree - he made beer drinking & finger salutes Glamorous.
ReplyDeleteThanks Deb. Glad to meet an Austin fan :) Cheers!
DeleteAnd that's the bottomline.. coz Stone Cold said so!
