A Cricketer they called "Gilly"...

Australia has always been a team that has an extremely good bench strength... Thats primarily because of their domestic format... Very few cricketers can actually enter the team in their early 20's... Michael Clarke being one of them... They had an extremely dependable wicketkeeper in Ian Healy... The last test match Healy played paved the way for one man, who they thought cant play test cricket, coz of his aggressive batting.. Test cricket was perceived to be a game between good bowling and good defensive batting... But they didnt know it was the dawn of a new era... An era where test matches will have results if batsmen can be aggressive (and not foolish, there's a thin line between aggressiveness and foolishness)... The Gilly era had just begun....

Gilly, as we all know, is Adam Gilchrist.. He is a wicketkeeper-batsman, an opener in one dayers and comes 5 down in Tests.... Its because of him that we now have a new term called wicketkeeper-allrounder.....

The onething that most cricket lovers will remember about Gilly is that famous match where he decided to walk after edging a ball and the umpire wasnt sure of the edge... The reason why it was most surprising was the fact that an Australian decided to walk... !!!... Australians are considered to give their everything in the field... even verbal volleys... And it wasnt a one-off thing that Gilly did... He has always done it while batting.... So much for an Australian, or for that matter, any cricketer... Dont get me wrong, I love the way Aussies play their game... especially, The Ashes...

Gilly was one of the main reasons why test cricket is now being perceived as exciting.... He comes 5 down.... and on his day can demolish any attack in the world... Aussies may be 50/5... and after 2 hours they would be 200/5.... Thats what Gilly is capable of....

Gilly had been the vice-captain of the Aussie team for long and was gonna be an obvious choice for captaincy post Ponting... But thats not what the Australian cricket board thought.... They named Clarke as captain and Gilly remained Vice-Captain... Something that Gilly thought, was unfair... And rightly so.... Hence, his decision to retire from international cricket was not surprising...

However, Gilly would love to forget the last series he played... The triseries... Aus-Ind-SRL... And the test series with India... And all the controversies that followed... And the way Aussie played their game... Umpires believing Ponting more than the replays.... Ponting appealing for a catch that he knew he dropped... Sportsmanship, my FOOT !!! I am not saying this, thats what they said while playing... Kumble rightly said after the Adelaide test.... There was only one team playing cricket in this test match, and Aussies were definitely not that team....

Call it luck, or perfect planning.... Gilly decided to join IPL.... A perfect thing that could happen to Gilchrist and all his fans... especially Indian fans.. I am a big fan of Gilchrist... Not only because of the way he plays... but also because of his sportsmanship.... Dhoni once went on record saying, he would love to be like Gilchrist... He wasnt talking about the technique.. But of Gilly's effectiveness...

Will miss Gilly in international cricket.....
